  1. Select 2 Precedent projects that are successful projects in their own type. One of the projects must be a result of EBD (See Center for Health Design Website and other resources highlighting EBD projects)
  2. Identify and explain how these Precedent Projects can help other designers to inform the design of like Facilities. That is, identify major findings that can be applied to other like facilities.
  3. Highlight Critical design Components that make the project successful: Finishes, furnishings, Color schemes, orientations, adjacencies, ect.

Presentation Format:

Each person will have 15 min to present 1 of their 2 projects in a power-point presentation to the class on Wednesday, May 30th.

All work and images MUST be cited. Use APA format. Try to withhold the use of direct quotes. Put into your own words and all paraphrased work must be cited as well.

Grading Criteria:

  • Value of the precedent study to the field of design. Use of studies and books peer-reviewed (not unknown blogs, internet information that lack review for content and potential bias)
  • Defines the precedents study, highlights special observation(s) and identifies special findings
  • Review of precedent study shows the application of analysis
  • Critical Design Components are fully covered and shows additional research (does not come straight from the book)
  • All work is correctly cited
  • Verbal and visual communication of findings

According to The Center for Health Design, Evidence-Based Design (EBD) is the process of basing decisions about the built environment on credible research to achieve the best possible outcomes. Included in this process are the following eight steps:

  • Define evidence-based goals and objectives.
  • Find sources for relevant evidence.
  • Critically interpret relevant evidence.
  • Create and innovate evidence-based design concepts.
  • Develop a hypothesis.
  • Collect baseline performance measures.
  • Monitor implementation of design and construction.
  • Measure post-occupancy performance results.
