an annotated bibliography about the development of same sex marriage legislation, and investigate the various factors that drive the movement forward.

The final assignment for this course is to produce an annotated bibliography. You should gather 6-8 original sources that directly relate to the research question you are investigating (Due May 1) and produce a short annotation for each source (see below). Your sources may include historical documents, manifestos, literary texts, scholarly articles, book-length studies, personal interviews, biographies and/or autobiographies, audio recordings, or other visual materials (film, posters, television clips, paintings, photographs).

Please note: while the films and texts we have studied this semester will more than likely inform your investigation, they do not count as original sources for this assignment.

For each source you should provide the following four pieces of information: citation, annotation, assessment, most important thing you learned/new question.

List films by their title. Include the name of the director, the film studio or distributor, and the release year.

2 Annotation (1-2 paragraphs)

For books and articles please include the main argument or idea expressed by the source, including two quotationsfrom the source that you found particularly insightful, thought-provoking, or perhaps controversial. For all other sources (songs, visual materials, etc.) please include a detailed description. Be sure to include the historical context for the source as well: when was it published/created? Is there any significant information to include about the author, artist, event or movement?

3 Assessment (1 paragraph)

Provide a brief statement about how the source relates to your research question as well as an assessment of its overall significance for your research topic. What did you learn from this source? Were there any problems or limitations with this source? You might also consider the type of source you are using and reflect on its field of impact and potential audiences. Is it a scholarly source (journal article, book-length study)? an artistic work (painting, song, video)? a blog or website? an important historical document? a manifesto? a visual document (film or photograph)? a work of philosophy or critical theory? What do these different types of sources add to your research?

4 What you learned/New Question(s)? (1-2 paragraphs)

Finally, provide a brief reflection on how your encounter with the source deepened (or complicated) your investigation of the “queer past”. Did reading/viewing/listening to this source change your initial question? Did it take you in a new direction you weren’t expecting? How would you reformulate your question based on what you learned from this source?
