Post 1: The circle is the foundation of life. From the smallest atoms to the largest planets and stars, the circle stands out as the most used shape in our universe. The development of the wheel has been hailed as one of the greatest inventions in man’s history. There is nothing we do in our daily life where circles are not involved. We use clocks to measure time with its 12 congruent arcs that mark the hours. I think the circle is what comes to mind when we consider balance. The Chinese symbol of yin and yang represent equal parts of a circle and represent how life is continually in a balanced state of good and bad. In our culture when two people get married, there is usually a wedding ring that is used to symbolize the bond between both people in a relationship that has not end because they promise to be with each other forever. The idea that a circle is made up of 360 degrees comes from ancient Sumeria where they believed that the earth took 360 days to orbit the sun (Lial, 2003).

Post 2: Circles are everywhere. I look at a circle every morning, my coffee cup. I am thankful for shape because it helps me get one from point A to point B when I am ready to travel. We use circles every day, but what we us it for the most is the shape of our tires. It is also used in architecture because of its symmetrical shape. Circles are used to determine a tree’s age by counting the concentric circles. A concentric circle is circles that lie in the same plane.

The diameter of a circle is straight line that passes through the center of the circle. A radius is half the link of the diameter. It starts from the center of the circle to one end of the diameter. An arc of a circle is a continuous line. The semicircle is an arch that goes from one diameter end point to the other. If an arc is longer than a semicircle then it is called a major arc. An arc that is shorter than a semicircle is called a minor arc.
