For your main post:

  • Discuss how government, private sector, and nongovernment organizations work together during domestic incidents.

The National Incident Management System (NIMS) defines the comprehensive approach guiding the whole community- all levels of the government, nongovernmental organizations (NGO), and the private sector- to work together seamlessly to prevent, protect against, mitigate, respond to, and recover from the effects of incidents. In order to achieve certain priorities, the incident management personnel uses NIMS components in accordance with three NIMS guidance priciples that are based on flexibility, standardization, and unity of effort. Flexibility enables NIMS to be applicable to incidents that vary widely in terms of adaptability. Standardization is the supporting factor that allows personnel and organizations to work together effectively. The guiding principle of unity allows various organizational representatives to coordinate efforts and support each other to achieve common objectives and maintaining authority and accountability.

  • Cite examples of the types of incidents for which NIMS can be used.

Hurricanes

Floods

Wildfires

Terrorist Attacks

  • Identify a specific example of an incident that occurred in the United States that had a significant economic impact or loss of life
  • Discuss how NIMS was used.

The 2013 Boston Marathon bombing was an incident that occurred in the United States that had a significant impact. Numerous agencies effectively used many core NIMS principles as they treated hundreds of seriously wounded victims and conducted a citywide manhunt for the bombers. Law enforcement, fire, emergency medical and other organizations almost immediately formed an effective unified command structure to oversee the response and delegate responsibilities among agencies.

  • Define the relationship in action at all different levels of government and the private sector utilizing the NIMS system.

NIMS provides a consistent nationwide framework and approach to enable government at all levels (Federal, State, tribal, and local), the private sector, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) to work together to prepare for, prevent, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the effects of incidents regardless of the incident’s cause, size, location, or complexity.

Any major domestic incident is going to rely on different organizations working together. The area where the incident occurred is going to be local support from the immediate area, as well as governmental support is the resources that FEMA and the FBI can provide. A local incident most likely won’t have the manpower to do extensive intelligence gathering and this is where the FBI can be useful. Non government organizations such as the American Red Cross and other non profits thrive when they are able to use their resources to help with incidents. Private businesses may work with the incident command by offering the use of equipment, supplies, vehicles and other resources they may have in the area.

The NIMS system owes a lot to the California Department of Forestry because as NIMS was being developed it used a lot of what the California Forestry department was already using with their massive forest fires (Salas, A. 2014).

In the Special Events Contingency Planning, NIMS has created a job aids manual that lists a variety of special events that could occur and how to handle them. They range from Chemical, Biological, and Radiological events to fireworks and laser displays. This manual shows the true reach that NIMS has (Special Events, 2005)

I referred to the California wildfires previously and in 2019 alone more of these wildfires have had a significant impact on the California economy as well as the federal government.

In the wildfires NIMS was used to help set up a massive and ongoing Emergency Operations Center. The 10 disciplines of NIMS was used to develop a command structure that helped to keep the EOC organized and functioning.

When it comes to heart disease we all can take a page out of the book about it. Heart disease is still a leading cause of death in Western countries. In my opinion one of the reasons behind CVD here is our eating habits. All the fast foods as well as processed foods aid in our, myself included our obesity. I am guilty of eating very bad, the double cheeseburgers, pizzas, foot long hotdogs and let’s not forget the infamous All-you-can eat spots. This type of eating can do some damage to your body especially and clogging of our arteries with fatty deposits. We as a society have moved away from a lot of physical labor to a less physical labor due to technology more machines are being made to make our jobs much easier and less physical added with our poor eating habits is a formula for disaster.

There are ways to prevent CVD by doing certain things to lower your chance of getting CVD. If you are a smoker then you should think about quitting. Within one year of quitting your risk for CVD are half of those who smoke. We should change our eating habits by making healthier choices when picking snacks. 75 percent of the salt in Americans diet comes from processed foods, according to the American Heart Association. Cutting back could lower your risk for coronary disease. Even a casual pace for short distances, walking can reduce cardiovascular issues by 30 percent or more. These are just some of the things we can do to have a healthier heart and cardiovascular system.

Considering the fact that the heart is located in the center of the thoracic cavity. The heart has layers, the pericardium which is composed of two layers, one is the parietal pericardium, it lines the walls of the sac . This is where the heart is found, the heart needs continuous blood flow to function properly. The blood supply comes from separate coronaries, the right, and the left supplies the heart muscle with blood. When a heart valve flows poorly it can show signs by a fluttering, hum, rasp and/or a tapping feeling. Signs of poor circulation or pain in the chest area could be signs of trouble with the heart. Figure1 3.4 shows when the heart pushes blood into the pulmonary or aortic artery.

It is important to avoid smoking, exercise regularly, get a regular checkup, talk to your physician about any concerns pertaining to your overall health, take any medications properly and have a balanced diet. Congestive heart failure is due to a weak heart. Congestive heart failure can occur due to age, as a person gets older the heart can weaken and fail to push the needed blood supply through the circulatory system. Congestive heart failure can cause other organs in the body to function poorly causing other health issues; pulmonary edema is a back up of fluid in the lungs. There are so many areas of the circulatory system that relies on the heart to function properly. The main functions of the blood is to supply, transport and protect. The substance in the blood is known as gases provide oxygen, (O2), and carbon dioxide(CO2). The different blood cells also have a specific role, the white blood cells account for only about 1% of the blood in your body. White blood cells protect against illness and disease, red blood cells carry oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the body.

In my workplace there is always food around since I work with children parents are constantly showing their appreciation through food. I know that my choices in what I eat aren’t always the best, I could choose fewer sweets to snack on during the day. When the students go to physical education class I could join in on some of the exercises instead of using that time as a break. We could also put a tracking chart in our teacher’s lounge to motivate each other to keep up with a daily regimen.
