Within the twenty-two agencies that make up the Department of Homeland Security there are two main agencies that are tasked with a large portion of the national security. The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement [ICE] and United States Customs Border Patrol [CBP].Both agencies deal with immigration, human trafficking, narcotics , terrorist activity and money laundering.

The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement [ICE] executes missions through federal statutes, preventing terrorism, illegal immigration and combating the illegal movement of trade. ICE not only helps with illegal immigration, but they help combat human trafficking, child exploitation and narcotics enforcement. The mission of ICE is to help promote homeland security and enforce U.S. federal and civil criminal law concerning border control, customs, trade and immigration. There are four operational divisions within ICE – Enforcement and Removal, Office of Internal Affairs, Homeland Security Investigations and Homeland Security Investigations Office of Intelligence.

The United States Customs and Border Patrol [CBP] has more than 60,000 employees securing the border. CBP is one of the nation’s largest law enforcement agencies, keeping the terrorist and their weapons out of our borders they also facilitate lawful international trade and travel. CBP fights illegal immigration, border security and agricultural activity protection, enforcing hundreds of United States [U.S.] laws and regulations also combating customs. The Mission statement ……” To safeguard America’s borders thereby protecting the public from dangerous people and materials while enhancing the Nation’s global economic competitiveness by enabling legitimate trade and travel.” (USDHS 2019 May 21).
