University of South Florida Understanding and Managing Pain

The purpose of this assignment is to get you thinking about the experience of pain. Please respond to the following questions:

  • Describe several examples of how (and under what circumstances) pain might have saved your life as a caveman or cavewoman?
  • Provide an example of when the sensation and reaction to pain were not equivalent. Provide an explanation for why this might be the case.
  • Provide some examples of cultural factors affecting the experience of pain. For example, if you have travelled or lived outside of the United States, share experiences of individual differences of pain that you have observed. Alternatively, draw on observations from television shows or movies.
  • How and why might gender socialization contribute to the perception and self-report of pain?

Your submission should be 2-3 pages total in length (double spaced, Times New Roman 12 point font, one inch margins).
