Share an example from the popular press about a time when an organizational leader used to power and influence for the good.

Jeff Bezos CEO of Amazon and one of the most powerful business leader of the 21st century recently wielded one of the most powerful moves in U.S. business history by canceling its plans to build an expansive corporate campus in New York City. The power move affected 25,000 thousand jobs and hurt New York in diversifying the city’s economy. Yukl (2013) states, “Power involves the capacity of one party (the “agent”) to influence another party (the “target”), but this influence has been described and measured in several different ways.” (8.1). The power of influence is evident in the fact that Bezos controls what Amazon can and cannot do, the city of New York or its state offices can force Amazon to proceed with the move. The cancellation of plans affects nearly $3 billion dollars in revenue for the city and countless jobs. Amazon states, “A number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward,” Amazon said in a statement.” (2014 Feb. 14). Anti-Amazon protesters were upset that the deal to build a sprawling state of the art campus in Queens is not facing opposition from progressive political opponents.
How did this leader’s actions impact morale and performance within the workforce?
Amazon did not inform the governor or the mayor of its decision to pull out until Thursday morning, shortly before the company posted its announcement online. Amazon’s actions created a political firestorm that has pitted Senate Democrats fighting to kill the deal. The people of New York are hurting even more by the fact jobs have been taken away by one leader’s decision to kill a deal he once agreed to. The leader of America’s most profitable organizations has the power to wreak havoc on a State and their economy.
