Poetry Response to School Shootings – Dear Reader Letter Assignment

Poetry Response to School Shootings – Dear Reader Letter Assignment

What is the controlling purpose of this project? What are you hoping to convey to your reader? What do you want them to learn, know, or be persuaded about? How you will express your argument, or thesis? How do you wish your audience to respond to your multigenre project?

Make sure your thesis is clear, persuasive, and arguable and can be supported by your poems. For example.

“I will argue that the 1960’s poems of Ryan Masir and Megan Reid, through their strong language and rich metaphor, created a sense of urgency and emotional response, galvanizing the U.S. community into rising up and stopping the Vietnam War.” (Note how this thesis statement address the poets, the rhetorical tools used to deliver the message, and the topic – all in one statement. In the research paper, the student would discuss the political climate at the time, then analyze the poems and argue for their emotional effect/pathos and ability to create social change. The visuals might include photos of war protests, and copies of the poems, newspaper article showing the anti-war publicity, etc.)

How will your “Dear Reader” Letter be assessed? I will assess this letter for your understanding of audience and purpose, organization, narrative technique, how effectively you address the above questions, and your mastery of the conventions of standard English.

SO MY TOPIC IS HOW POETRY RESPONDS TO SCHOOL SHOOTINGS AND HOW PEOPLE EXPRESS THE HORROR THROUGH POETRY, CALL READER THE ACTION.
