Art leading up to the High Renaissance were Greece, Roman, Christian,”Middle Ages”, and Baroque art.

Greek art emphasized ideal or perfect versions of its subjects. The statue known as the Spear Bearer is an excellent example of Greek classicism, which depicted the perfect version of the human form.

Roman art was more practical. Roman portraiture of the Republican period, such as the Portrait Head of an Old Man, achieved a high degree of individuality rarely found in Greek sculpture. It showed more of a realistic view of a human head than the Greek art style.

The late Roman and early Christian style differed greatly from the naturalism of earlier Roman or Greek portraits. The eyes were larger to reflect a more “spiritual” gaze.

The Baroque period went in the direction of energy, feeling, light, scale, and composition. Baroque artists set aside the balanced harmony achieved by Renaissance artists such as Raphael in his School of Athens and Michelangelo in his David, as they explored more innovative uses of space and more intense ranges of light and shadow.
