Role of Shared Information in Modern American Society Discussion

Role of Shared Information in Modern American Society Discussion

Readings: “Mark Zuckerberg’s War on Free Will,” by Franklin Foer
“Rent Seeking and the Making of an Unequal Society,” by Joseph Stiglitz
“Great to Watch,” by Maggie Nelson

Speaking about methods by which private financial firms shape markets for their benefit, Stiglitz writes that “[w]hile lack of transparency results in more profit for the bankers, it leads to lower economic performance,” and adverse societal outcomes. Both Nelson and Foer had much to say about the role of transparency and the effects of shared information on personal and societal behavior. Using examples from all three articles, answer the following question:

What is the role of shared information in modern American society? Can equal access to knowledge alone lead to more equal and just societal outcomes?

Questions to consider that might help with your response:

  • What is the role of shame and embarrassment in contemporary American societal behavior ?
  • What is “image flow”?
  • What does Sontag mean when she refers to the “age of extremity”?
