Electricity Usage
Visit http://www.energyusecalculator.com/calculate_electrical_usage.htm and think through each item type listed on the site. If you have those in your home click on the item, read the description, and then estimate the number of hours you use that specific device. Then add a line to the table in your results document. If you have multiple of that item be sure to account for that by either adding them all together or by putting multiple lines on your results document. (If you need more lines you can either tab off the bottom and it will add lines automatically or you can right click and insert row.) All of the columns in the table are calculated for you except the kWh per Month column, so let’s do an underestimate and use 30 days in a month. At the end of the sheet you should add each of the columns up and get a “Total” row.
Comparison to Reality
Now comes the fun part, find a representative electricity bill and compare your calculated numbers to your actual numbers. Write 3 – 5 sentences about how they compare. Why is your estimate too high or low? What is it missing or over compensating for? Are there devices that you use a lot that aren’t in the calculator? Do some research and tell me if that seems to be the missing amount!
