1-The speakers main argument is about how stories are told.

2- here are three quotes he said to back up his story
A- “I learned the melancholic history of my people through the melancholic history of another people.” B- ” What we know about how to be who we are comes from stories. It comes from novels, the movies, the fashion magazines. It comes from popular culture.” C-He uses quick joke to get us to understand the importance of story and how its told. It is the joke about the rice lunch

3- My biggest takeaway from this story, actually understanding the point. He is right he can all just have a conversation with no story or point behind it. Its useless. yet if we take the time to investigate have something interesting to talk about, that’s how it made into history.

4- Aboni uses to type of stories, he uses his personal experience and jokes that can be used as something visual for the people to imagine.

5- I personally did not see a specific pattern. I did see him use serious stories to catch peoples attention.

6- I think Abanis purpose on his speech, is to show the people the importance of telling a story.

7- I believe Abani is using a monotone. It was good made his speech serious but I do think there was parts he could of changed a bit like when quoting certain people or situations.

8- They are a little different because Adichie explains to not believe just one persons story when there is different views or someone could of just had a different experience while Abani is saying inform yourself within that subject and stick to it.

Week 6 Discussion: TED Talk 5

  1. The speaker wants the African story to be told from a different perspective. Making a generalized misguided statements and narrative about Africa is now disgusting. The readers and those who want to retell the African narrative must now read about the African writers, and not just a single book regarding Africans. The main theme is thus newer approaches to the African narrative.
  2. The example about his father who went to university and was equally at oxford, but kept on warning him about eating food served by a Yoruba man’s house. The other example if where the speaker says we have to read about the Africans in order to understand, not just “Things Fall Apart” and using the book to make generalized comments. The third example is that of tom. Dick and harry and they end up committing suicide due to rice served on a daily basis.
  3. The dangers of telling the stories in a single way. We must seek for real knowledge before making certain comments about people. A single approach to telling a story should be avoided.
  4. Abani is using various stories which are real-life accounts in Nigeria and accounts which touch on his personal life as he grew up. Stories range from accounts of Yoruba people to those of his father in Cork University.
  5. The story is told in a captivating manner, with the examples being used to reinforce the speaker’s ideas. He wants to create a bond which helps in the connection with the listeners.
  6. He wants to elicit newer understanding among the listeners. He wants them to learn the importance of reading, and in particular reading before making any stories about Africa. The people in America must adopt an informed tone about Africans before telling their story.
  7. He sounds nostalgic about the African ways. Africa has some positive aspects which the world must learn to appreciate. He equally sounds attached to the African cultures; the need for the audience to understand these approaches is thus reinforced.
  8. Adichie and Abani share the same background. Both come from Africa and they stress on the need for background check before certain comments are made. These concepts are a reverberation of the need not to make comments before undertaking background check.
