Consider the rather large cast of characters we meet in this play and the events that make up the plot.

Characters: Lear, Cornelia, Goneril, the Duke of Albany, Regan, the Duke of Cornwall, Edmund, Edgar, the Duke of Gloucester, Oswald, Kent, and the fool

Initial Posts and Responses:

Select two of the characters who strike you as opposite as a basis for the initial post. Then select one of the following pairing to examine the characters:

  • civilized behavior and animalistic instincts/behavior
  • deception and honesty
  • authority and chaos
  • reason (what can be controlled) and nature (the uncontrollable)

What is revealed about the characters when we examine them from one of these perspectives?
